BYB Youth Umpire Program

Registered Umpires can work Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons (but must complete training in Spring!)

Both new and returning umpires must complete the registration. All new and returning umpires are required to complete the training sessions held in March.

  • Gives you added support on high school / college applications because it requires many of the qualities schools look for - leadership, confidence, and the ability to make decisions under pressure
  • Provides a great way to make some extra money while staying involved in baseball

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW APPLICANTS

• Must be League Age 12 years or older
• Have at least one year prior baseball experience at the current Spring AA level, the Spring Minors level or above
• Live in Brookline, or attend school in Brookline, or have parents/ guardians who work for the Town of Brookline
• Must learn self-paced training materials, including reading and video, and pass the test at the completion of training
• Previous umpires who have not umpired in the last two years must also attend all sessions.

There is NO COST to the training sessions. Please sign up only if you are committed to becoming an umpire and plan to be available for games for at least the Spring season.

TRAINING SESSION SCHEDULE:

Training will include 4 sessions of self-study reading materials (download all four session PDFs from this page) and watching videos. Videos will be available before the end of March. There will be one-hour review Google Meet session on April 3, 2024 from 6-7pm.

After we complete the review Google Meet session, an online test link will be sent out. Test must be taken and passed by April 12, 2024. Must get 90% or above to pass. Can take the test multiple times to achieve a passing score.

COST:

There is no cost to participate in the training, but spots are limited. We do require a commitment that you will be available for assignments for at least the Spring season.

GAMES:

Games occur weeknights at 5:15pm and Sundays during the entire day.

BYB PROVIDES YOUTH UMPIRES:

• BYB Umpire Shirt and Cap
• Counter and Brush

UMPIRES MUST PROVIDE:

• Grey Slacks (field & home plate umpires)
• Black Belt (field & home plate umpires)
• Dark Shoes (field & home plate umpires)
• Catcher’s Gear (home plate umpires)
• Apron (home plate umpires)

PAY FOR YOUTH UMPIRES:

• $30 per game
